✏️📚 Writers’ Workshop is in full swing in Mrs. Bishop’s class!
First grade authors kicked off the year by writing about something very important… themselves! Inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ Our Treasures Within, students reflected on the people, places, experiences, and interests that make them unique.
Today, these authors had the opportunity to share their writing with a partner, sharing their stories and listening to the treasures within one another.

Our 5th graders put this central idea into action this week! Students took on a communication challenge and had to collaborate, think creatively, problem-solve, and design a way to get their message across. They then connected their experience to the ways communication has changed over time. They began to see how a problem, need, or change can inspire people to discover new possibilities, design solutions, and innovate. This is what learning in an IB World School looks like—students aren't simply given an idea to memorize. They inquire, experience, question, collaborate, make connections, and construct meaning for themselves. And that's the difference. 💙🌎
First grade students in Mrs. Bishop’s class brought their learning to life by creating urban, suburban, and rural communities! Students loved using their creativity to add characteristics of each type of community to their collage.

Keeping our students safe is a top priority!Today we practiced with a tornado drill and a fire drill. Everyone did a great job!
Our 4K friends are busy learning, exploring, and growing together! 💕 Small-group activities give our children opportunities to practice new skills, work with friends, make choices, and learn through hands-on play. We love watching their little minds grow while they have fun!
🐞 A Little Recess Luck! 🍀
Sometimes the best learning moments happen when we least expect them! During recess today, one of our students discovered a tiny ladybug, and immediately shared the special find with others. 🐞❤️ Ladybugs are considered symbols of good luck in many cultures around the world. What a perfect little reminder that the world is full of things worth noticing, wondering about, and sharing! Our IB Learner Profile Attribute of the Month is Communicator, and this little moment was a beautiful example of what it means to be a communicator: noticing, connecting, and sharing ideas and discoveries with others. At Hendrix, we know that learning doesn’t always happen inside four walls. Sometimes, it happens right there on the playground… with a little ladybug in the palm of your hand. 🌎🐞

🌟 IB LEARNING IN 5TH GRADE 🌟
Our fifth graders have been tackling a big question this month: What makes an IB World School different from other schools?
To kick things off, they were given a fun challenge: 10 minutes, everyday objects (think cups, pipe cleaners, and tape), and one job ...create something to make someone's life better. Students had to decide who they were helping, what problem that person had, and what they could build to solve it. The creativity was on full display! 💡 Afterward, we asked them to reflect: What did it actually take to pull this off? Turns out... a LOT of IB thinking! Asking questions became Inquiry. Working with teammates became Communication & Collaboration. Changing their design after it didn't work became Reflection. They realized they'd been using real IB skills the whole time. They just didn't have the vocabulary for it yet. This is all building toward their end assessment: a 60-Second IB Elevator Speech, where they'll have to explain what an IB school is to someone who's never heard of it , before the elevator doors open! We are so proud of how our Hendrix fifth graders are living the IB mission every single day. This past Friday, Hendrix had a PBIS assembly to start off the year with some positive encouragement from college athletes during our PACK rally. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. PBIS improves social emotional competence, academic success, and the school climate. Integrating the PBIS framework into our school climate helps to create a positive, predictable, equitable, and safe learning environment where all students can thrive.
Don't forget, if your child wants to audition for Moana, he or she MUST attend one of our two "Audition How-To" classes next week on August 19 or 20th. Sign-ups will close at noon on Tuesday, August 18.
We are so proud of everyone who took a risk, stepped outside of their comfort zone, and auditioned for the dance team! It takes courage to put yourself out there, and we hope you and your dancer are proud of themselves for taking that chance.
If your dancer did not make the team this time, please know that there are still many opportunities ahead! Our upcoming school musical Moana will need dancers, and we would love to see you continue to share your talent, passion, and love of dance. Keep taking risks and putting yourself out there—we are proud of you! 💙
